It involves two medications: the first blocks progesterone, a hormone necessary for fetal survival, while the second induces uterine contractions to expel the fetus. This method is typically used during the early stages of pregnancy, up to 10 weeks gestation.
Although Virginia permits abortions up to 26 weeks, the abortion pill is only available within the first 10 weeks. After this period, a woman’s options become more limited and include procedures such as suction abortion, dilation and curettage (D&C), dilation and evacuation (D&E), and induction abortion. These methods are more invasive and carry varying risks and side effects.

A judicial bypass allows a minor to seek court approval for an abortion, bypassing the parental consent requirement. To obtain a judicial bypass, the minor must demonstrate to a judge that they are mature enough to make the decision independently, or that involving a parent would not be in their best interest. The judicial process is confidential, and if granted, the minor can proceed with the abortion without parental involvement.
In many states across the U.S., a waiting period is required before a person can proceed with an abortion. After an initial consultation with a doctor, where the individual is informed about the procedure, risks, and alternatives, they must wait a specified period—typically 24 to 72 hours—before undergoing the abortion. This waiting period is designed to ensure the person has adequate time to reflect on their decision and the information provided.
However, Virginia does not impose a mandatory waiting period for abortion. Once a person has consulted with a healthcare provider, they can proceed with the procedure without any additional delay.
