The abortion pill is FDA-approved up to 10 weeks after your last menstrual period (LMP). It consists of two different medications that you take 24-48 hours apart. The first medication taken causes the death of the baby, and the second medication causes your uterus to contract so that the contents of the uterus are expelled. A surgical abortion is a medical procedure that ends your pregnancy. If a woman is more than 10 weeks into her pregnancy and is not eligible for the abortion pill, or in the event of a medication abortion failure, a surgical abortion may have to be performed.
This is the most common type of surgical abortion procedure and it can be performed up to 14 weeks LMP. During this procedure, a local anesthetic is given into the cervix. IV sedation may also be offered. The cervix is then stretched open with dilating rods. A suction catheter is inserted into the uterus to suction out the amniotic fluid and the baby. A curette (scraping instrument) may be used to scrape out any remaining fetal parts and placenta.
This surgical abortion procedure is used for 15 weeks LMP and up. The cervix is softened 2 days before the procedure using laminaria and/or vaginal medication. Local anesthetic and IV sedation are given or general anesthesia if available. The cervix is stretched open further using metal dilating rods. Forceps are then used to remove the fetus and the contents of the uterus. A curette (scraping instrument) may be used to scrape out any remaining fetal parts and placenta.
After viability (23 weeks), the dilatation and evacuation procedure takes 2-3 days to complete. A lethal injection may be given to stop the baby’s heart before dilatation of the cervix begins. After the cervix is dilated, forceps are used to remove the fetus and the contents of the uterus. A curette (scraping instrument) may be used to scrape out any remaining fetal parts and placenta.
