Abortion Pill Information
What Is the Abortion Pill?
The abortion pill is a method of abortion available in the early stages of pregnancy (FDA approved up to 10 weeks from the first day of the last menstrual period LMP). Unlike the name suggests, the abortion pill actually consists of two different medications, which are taken separately to end the pregnancy and remove it from the uterus.
How Does the Abortion Pill Work?
The abortion pill process involves two medications. The first blocks progesterone, essential for pregnancy, leading to the baby’s death. After a clinic prescribes it, you take this medication orally. Then 24-48 hours later at home, the second medication is taken and will induce uterine contractions, expelling the pregnancy usually within 12 to 24 hours.
Do I Need To See a Doctor To Get the Abortion Pill?
Abortion pills are available at clinics and medical centers providing abortion services. Buying them online is risky as these drugs lack FDA oversight, making their safety and contents uncertain. Some sites offer home abortion instructions which can also be unsafe and unreliable. It’s safest to rely on trusted healthcare providers for abortion and follow up care.
How Far Along Can I Be and Still Take the Pill?
The FDA has approved the use of the abortion pill for up to 10 weeks from the first day of your last menstrual period. It’s very important that you know how far along you are so that you can determine which abortion services and procedure options are safest for you. First Care Women’s Health provides free pregnancy testing and ultrasound to help you determine how far along you are in your pregnancy during our Pre-Abortion Screenings.
Can the Abortion Pill’s Effects Be Reversed?
If you change your mind about ending your pregnancy within 72 hours after taking the first pill, abortion pill reversal may be possible. In some cases, doctors are able to use progesterone to counteract the abortion pill’s effects, allowing the pregnancy to continue. Many women have been successful in getting the abortion pill reversed and have gone on to give birth to healthy babies even after starting the abortion pill process. The Abortion Pill Reversal Hotline is 1-877-558-0333.
Abortion Costs Information
How Much Do Abortion Pills Cost?
Abortion clinics in the Northern Virginia area charge between $400 and $500 for the abortion pill. If you choose to take the abortion pill and it does not effectively end your pregnancy, you may need an additional procedure called a D & C which would include additional costs.
How Much Does an Abortion Cost?
The cost of an abortion depends upon the type of abortion procedure you have, and the type of abortion procedure you have depends on how far along you are. Additional services such as IV sedation for a surgical abortion may be an additional cost. A limited obstetric ultrasound will determine how far along you are. You’ll also understand the various associated medical risks for the abortion procedure you are considering.

Medical Abortion (Abortion Pill)
The abortion pill is FDA-approved up to 10 weeks after your last menstrual period (LMP). It consists of two different medications that you take 24-48 hours apart. The first medication causes the death of the baby, and the second medication causes the uterus to contract so that the contents of the uterus are expelled. Before taking the abortion pill, it is very important for your health and safety to first have an ultrasound. There is no cost to you for ultrasounds at First Care Women’s Health. We can confirm your pregnancy through an ultrasound to verify how far along you are, the location of your pregnancy (in the uterus vs. ectopic), and the viability of your pregnancy. The abortion pill will not abort an ectopic pregnancy. Our medical team can answer your questions regarding the different abortion procedures so you can make a fully informed choice.
Surgical Abortion
This is the most common type of surgical abortion procedure, and it can be performed up to 14 weeks the last menstrual period (LMP). The cervix is sometimes softened using laminaria (dried seaweed) and/or vaginal medication the night before the procedure. A local anesthetic is injected into the cervix. The cervix is then stretched open with dilating rods. A suction catheter is inserted into the uterus to suction out the amniotic fluid and the baby. A curette (scraping instrument) may be used to scrape out any remaining fetal parts and placenta.
Dilatation & Evacuation after viability
This abortion procedure is performed after viability (23 weeks and up) Before the abortion begins, a lethal injection may be given to stop the baby’s heart. The cervix is then softened and dilated with laminaria (dried seaweed) and/or vaginal medication for 3 days prior to the abortion. Local anesthetic and IV sedation are given or general anesthesia, if available. The baby is then pulled out with surgical instruments, and the uterus will be scraped with a curette to scrape out any remaining fetal parts and placenta. Our medical professionals will help you understand the entire procedure for both time frames.

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg implants somewhere other than the uterus. Most often, it implants in the fallopian tube. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, ectopic pregnancies account for approximately 2% of all reported pregnancies. The abortion pill will not end an ectopic pregnancy.
Am I Pregnant?
A positive pregnancy test should never be the only factor in making an abortion decision. Learn more about first signs of pregnancy/pregnancy symptoms here . How do you know if you’re really pregnant? The only true confirmation of a pregnancy in with an ultrasound that is reviewed and signed by a physician. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists estimates that early pregnancy loss is common, occurring in about 10% of recognized pregnancies. Many losses occur before a woman’s pregnancy is confirmed by ultrasound. If a pregnancy is not viable, an abortion is not necessary.
We offer FDA-approved, laboratory-quality pregnancy tests. If your test is positive, you can be evaluated by a member of our medical staff to receive confirmation of pregnancy by limited obstetric ultrasound – all at no charge. What Type of Abortion Should I Get?
During your visit to First Care Women’s Health, you’ll learn how far along you are through an ultrasound that would determine the type of abortion that may be performed. A trained, licensed medical professional who puts you first will explain the associated risks for the various procedures.
Common Types of Abortion Include:
- Abortion Pill
- Suction /Aspiration Abortion
- Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) before viability
- Dilation and Evacuation after viability
The most common early symptoms of pregnancy often include:
- Missed period (amenorrhea) – For women who have regular menstrual cycles, if your period is one week late or more, you might be pregnant. This pregnancy symptom is not a reliable sign of pregnancy if you have irregular cycles.
- Tender or swollen breasts – In early pregnancy, the hormones estrogen, progesterone, and prolactin are elevated and often make the breasts/nipples sore due to tissue swelling.
- Nausea with or without vomiting – Morning sickness or all day sickness usually begins 1-2 months after conception. Some women never feel nauseated, while some women struggle with it their entire pregnancy. The cause of this nausea isn’t clear, but it may be caused by pregnancy hormones.
- Increased urination – Due to the increased amount of blood in your body during pregnancy, your kidneys will have to process extra fluid that ends up as urine in your bladder, leading to more frequent urination.
- Fatigue – Fatigue is a very common early symptom of pregnancy. A rapid rise in progesterone may contribute to this fatigue. Your body is now supporting two lives, taking more energy.
- Moodiness – Mood swings including being emotional and weepy are common due to the rush of hormones in early pregnancy.
- Bloating – These hormonal changes can also make you feel bloated like you may feel at the start of a menstrual period.
- Light spotting – Spotting can be caused by implantation bleeding and happens when the fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus, about 2 weeks after conception. Not all women experience this spotting.
- Mild cramping – Mild, period-like cramps can be normal in early pregnancy.
- Constipation – Your digestive system can slow down due to hormonal changes, leading to constipation. The iron in your prenatal vitamin can also contribute to this.
- Food aversions – During pregnancy, your sense of smell and taste may be heightened. Foods you usually enjoy might not be appealing, and you may be more sensitive to certain odors. Hormonal changes are the cause of these changes and most other symptoms of pregnancy.
- Nasal congestion – A stuffy or runny nose is not uncommon due to increased blood production during pregnancy. The mucous membranes in your nose may swell and be congested or dry out and bleed easily.
